Affordable Care Act | Rock Hill and Fort Mill, SC
Your health is integral to your quality of life and general wellness. Even if you diligently maintain a healthy and responsible lifestyle, various injuries, illnesses and other health conditions may still occur. With this in mind, you should prioritize acquiring and maintaining appropriate health insurance, such as through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), as an adequate policy can be critical in allowing you to access essential medical services without exorbitant out-of-pocket costs.
What Is the Affordable Care Act?
Also known as Obamacare, the ACA is a health care reform law enacted in 2010 with the following primary goals:
- To make health insurance more affordable for more people
- To expand the government’s Medicaid program to cover more adults
- To support innovative ways of delivering care and, therefore, lower overall health care costs
How the Affordable Care Act Works
The ACA includes various requirements, such as requiring individuals to carry health insurance through their employer, government programs like Medicaid, or private coverage. The law also bars insurance companies from denying coverage based on preexisting conditions and allows children to maintain coverage through their parents’ policies until age 26.
The enactment of the ACA also coincided with the creation of the Health Insurance Marketplace, which helps to facilitate shopping for coverage, and introduced various standards that mandate coverage for many services, such as maternity care. The ACA also includes various financial incentives and ramifications for employers regarding offering coverage to their employees.
When Can I Enroll?
Every year, the ACA has an open enrollment period during which you can purchase coverage or adjust your plan. Open enrollment typically lasts from Nov. 1 through Jan. 15 of the following year, although if you are accessing coverage through your employer, the exact parameters of your enrollment period may vary.
In some cases, you may also be able to enroll in Obamacare at other times of the year via a special enrollment period. These opportunities are triggered by various life events, such as losing your existing coverage, moving to a different state, getting married or having a baby.
