Discover Your Medicare Options

We recognize that everyone’s health care needs are unique, and Medicare is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B coverage. The parts of Medicare are designed to help provide coverage for various health care needs, including the following:

  • black and gray stethoscopeMedicare Part A (hospital insurance)
    • Inpatient hospital stays
    • Skilled nursing facility care
    • Hospice care
    • Home healthcare
  • Medicare Part B (medical insurance)
    • Doctor’s services
    • Outpatient care
    • Preventive services
    • Medical supplies
  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)
    • Optional coverage sold by insurance companies that combines Part A and Part B coverage
    • Often includes prescription drug coverage (Part D)
    • Some plans offer benefits not covered by Original Medicare, such as dental, hearing and vision care
  • Medicare Part D (prescription drug plans)
    • Helps cover the cost of prescription medications
    • Available as optional standalone plans or may be included in Medicare Advantage plans

Enrolling in Medicare

Enrolling in Medicare at the right time is crucial to ensure you get the coverage you need when you need it. The initial enrollment period (IEP) is most people’s first opportunity to enroll in Medicare. It starts three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birth month and extends for three months after your birth month.

Enrolling during your IEP ensures you won’t face late enrollment penalties for Part B or Part D. These penalties can increase your monthly premiums for as long as you have Medicare.

If you’re already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) benefits when you turn 65, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. This seamless transition helps avoid coverage gaps.

If you miss your IEP, you have another chance to enroll during the general enrollment period (GEP), which runs from Jan. 1 to March 31 each year. Depending on your circumstances, enrolling during the GEP may still result in late enrollment penalties for Part B and Part D.

There are also special enrollment periods for those who qualify. SEPs are triggered by specific life events, such as losing employer-sponsored coverage or moving to a new area. During a SEP, you can enroll in Medicare outside the IEP or GEP without penalties.
